Our Club - Sep 2023
It’s September and time to celebrate our annual club tournament and finals weekend which took place earlier this month. Social as well as competitive, everyone who attends always has a great time…and this year was no exception…

Great Tennis and Great Company
Our annual championship’s weekend took place on 9 and 10 September. It was a great opportunity for club and community to come together and enjoy each others’ company and great tennis. Fuelled by the barbecue, cakes and other refreshments, the crowd happily cheered on all our competitors, despite a weather pattern including extreme heat, rain, thunder and lightning!
From under 8’s to over 50’s, twenty-two finals were held over the weekend, including singles and doubles. Every match was played and supported in good spirit, and it was lovely to see so many of our members getting involved.
A big thank you to:
- Everyone who played in the tournament (whether you made it to the finals or not) and everyone who turned out to enjoy the weekend
- Our coaching team and volunteer umpires
- The barbecue team, and everyone who baked cakes and provided other refreshments
- Ben Kirkley and James Bellringer for taking brilliant photos
- Anyone else who helped out!
And of course a HUGE thank you to the Tournament Organisers - Stuart Beaver, Di Zimmer, Karen Payne and Nick Bloom for being the brains, energy and heart behind this tournament. An event like this takes A LOT of planning and this team work incredibly hard behind the scenes over many months to ensure each year the tournament gets better and better. A massive congratulations to this team on yet another success.

Our Club Needs You!
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on 8 November 2023 at our clubhouse. The AGM is a great opportunity to hear about the health of the club and to have your input into the club’s future – all members are welcome and encouraged to come along. Refreshments will be available!
A number of our Committee will be stepping down at the AGM this year, and we’re looking for new people to step in and keep evolving Backwell Tennis Club as a great place to be. Please chat to Emma or someone else on the committee if you think you’d like to get involved:
- Club Secretary – if you’re organised and good at communication
- Junior Rep – if you’re inspired to help our juniors play more tennis
- Welfare Officer – if you’re interested in creating a safe environment for everyone to play
- Men’s Captain – if you’re enthusiastic about competitive league play
Contact details for all committee members – please get involved!
Drop Shots...
Our defibrillator was called into service in August for the first time. Staff from the Rising Sun Pub were directed to our defib by the Ambulance Service after a customer experienced heart pains. While the defib was ultimately not used, it was comforting to everyone involved that it was available and ready for use if required.
A reminder that training on Resuscitation/Defibrillators will be held by St John Ambulance at our clubhouse on Sunday 8 October at 10.30am – please contact Diane Zimmer on
