Our Club - Summer 2025

It's been a long and generally hot summer and lots of tennis is being enjoyed at our club!  In this edition, we'll give you a summary of what's been happening and share what's coming up...

Emma Pattison
Club Chair

While we enjoyed our Open Day, our long-time friend Tom Jackson was preparing to run the London Marathon in memory of his Nanna.  We're so proud of Tom who successfully completed the race and raised over £5,300 for Alzheimer's Research UK, including £300 donated by our members during a Christmas event at our club.  Well done Tom!

Walking Tennis

At our Open Day, we were really pleased to introduce Walking Tennis to Backwell Tennis Club - it's a great form of the game that prioritises shot making over agility and is terrific for people who have less mobility or who are recovering from injury but who still love to hit a ball.  Follow-on Walking Tennis sessions have continued through the summer and will start again in September.  If you fancy giving it a go then please contact the club at This email address is being protected from spambots. Rusty Rackets

Club Play 2

Our club play sessions have been extended to include a Monday night 'rota' , and we recently held our first Rusty Racket/Intermediate club play option on Thursday evenings. This was great fun with everyone enjoying a 'no-pressure' environment to play a bit of doubles and meet new friends.  If you're interested in trying out the club then please get in touch and we'll find a session that suits you - contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Junior League

Adults League

Our league players have been busy in both junior and adult leagues - results may be mixed but everyone has had a fabulous time!  A big thank you for the help of our parents who manage the junior teams (Jude, Becky, Emma R and Karim) and to the men who stepped up in lieu of us having a permanent men's captain (Tom, Dave, Michael and Stuart).

Our adult league players held a celebration evening in the clubhouse to mark the end of the summer league season.  A lovely evening with lots of laughter, injury stories, beers and snacks...but not least a chance to give...

Captains celebration

...a MASSIVE thank you to our captains Pippa and Zoe - without them we would be completely lost!!  Our league players funded gifts to show our unfailing gratitude for the 'dream team' and their amazing organisational and persuasive powers.  Great work ladies and long may it continue!

Club Tournament

our club tournament - the season finale!

A reminder that our club tournament finals will be held on the weekend of 13/14 September:

  • Saturday 13 Sept - A fun handicapped (rotating partner) American Doubles Tournament will be held in the afternoon.  All adult and student members are eligible to enter as individuals - entry closes on 1 September and there are a few places still available!  Enter via the Tournament entry form
  • Sunday 14 Sept - The finals of all our adult and junior category competitions.  There'll be great tennis to watch all day, along with copious food and the return of the lunchtime barbecue.  A great chance to enjoy our club community, with friends, family and the local community more than welcome to join us

As well as watching the tennis, we need volunteers to help set up and clear the club at the start and end of the day, and our normal request goes to our Cake Making Brigade to provide enough food to keep everyone happy! There's also a specific request for someone to perform Master of Ceremony duties for the day...so if there is anyone happy to be in the limelight then please let one of the tournament organisers know.  Many thanks and hope to see you there!
